Why Your Feet Stink and How to Get Rid of the Smell

stinky feet

Do you have stinky feet?  Worried that others can smell your feet through your shoes?  I’ve had this problem for a few years and by the end of the day I could smell my own feet through my shoes.  I tried everything to hide this embarrassing odor and have finally been able to get the smell under control. I will admit that I have to stay vigilant or my stinky feet will return with a vengeance.  I believe part of my problem is that I use orthonics and they really seem to absorb and capture the stink and won’t let it go!

Hopefully these tips can help you out if your feet stink too.

Foot odor known by the medical term of bromodosis is usually nothing to worry about.  Here are reasons that your feet stink and what you can do about it.

You are sweating like crazy

When your feet sweat they create a perfect confinement for bacteria.  These bacteria create the odor by breaking down your sweat and dead skin cells.  Gross!

To combat sweat related funk you need to change your socks often.  You want to wear socks that wick the moisture away.  Merino wool is really good at doing this.

If dry socks don’t fix your odor problem try putting antipersonnel on your feet. Yep good old fashioned deodorant.  Just rub a few swipes across the bottom of your feet before putting on your socks and see if that helps.

You wear the same shoes every day

When your shoes stay warm and moist all the time you are just asking for trouble.  That is why you don’t want to wear the same shoes every single day.  Give them a rest and give your shoes time to air out.

You are stressed out

When you are under pressure or stressing out you can get extra sweaty. And unfortunately sweat from stressing out comes from different glands and tends to stink more.  So if you find yourself sweating it out in the office or in other places try to bring an extra pair of socks.

How to Get Rid of Stinky Feet

Air Out Those Orthonics

If you wear orthonics remove them from the shoes every night and sprinkle them with baking soda or Odor Eater powder.  Don’t leave them in the shoe.  From experience this won’t work.  Trust me!

Use Lots of Febreze

A couple of squirts of Febreze in the morning directly in your shoes before you put them on is also pretty effective.  However I’ve found that it wears off as I get later in the day.  I would recommend the extra strength formula.  I personally use the Unstopables brand.
