When To Get Your Toe Nail Surgically Removed

Beautiful I know!

I don’t know anyone with a big toenail uglier than mine.  My wife makes fun of it and says that it looks diseased.  My kids run away from me pointing and saying “gross”.  The list goes on and on.

The big toenail on my left foot has been in pretty bad shape since my highschool football days.  I am in my 40’s so that is saying something.  In general I have pretty thick skin and few things get to me but I must admit as my toenail has gotten worse over the years it has become a major source of embarassment for me.  When I go to the swimming pool I am extremely self consisous and usually try to wear swim shoes to cover my feet.  I couldn’t even imagine wearing open toe sandals.

I have tried every over the counter medication and homeopathic remedy I could find and nothing has worked.  So now that I am well down the path of recovery for my bunion surgery I went ahead and bit the bullet and scheduled to have my toenail removed in a few weeks by my orthopedic surgeon.

My “beautiful” toenail!

I will update this post once I have the procedure to update everyone on my progress.  After dealing with bunion surgery recovery I am not looking forward to this since I have heard it can be a painful recovery.  I am really looking forward though to finally getting rid of this frakensttein toenail.  I just hope the one that grows back to replace it looks much better.  Stay tuned.

Week 2

Quick update:  Had my toenail removed 2 weeks ago.  The shots were the most painful part of the process.  I needed 4 shots to get the toe numb enough for the procedure.  This took about 25 minutes and then the doctor came in and removed the toenail in about a minute.  I couldn’t feel any pain only pressure as he was pulling it off.

Here is how it looks after 2 weeks.  I am worried that it will grow back just as ugly as before as it is already showing brown spots in the nail bed but hopefully it won’t be as bas as before.  Keeping my fingers and toes crossed! Ha!
